Landshapes | A group of aerial view New Zealand landscapes This series of works are based on photographs from a book published in the 1980’s called Discover New Zealand, the Glorious Islands 1. It is an iconic coffee table publication of mainly aerial photographs. I fell in love with this book when I discovered it in an Op shop and all the photos are stunning. It is the story of an aerial journey to photograph and document the coastline of New Zealand in the early 1980’s. It was was also made into a TV series. I am presenting the paintings as my essay about the book, the story and the place. As a group, it is a study about sea, land, our relationship to it, our history, the future and our culture. My intention was not simply to copy the photographs but to comment on the forms revealed by the aerial viewpoint and enhanced by a very restricted palette. When I began this project in mid 2006 I had no idea that it would develop into a body of work worth showing as a group, but as I became more engaged with the story, so it seemed to gain significance. 1.
