Dreaming This series is a suite of smaller canvases painted and exhibited at Milford Galleries Auckland in 2003. The statement below was submitted with the works. “Deep in the Australian outback, Alice Kelly, a white haired elder of the Muthi-muthi people, draws relentlessly with felt pens on a white pad. To me her drawings look like colourful scribbles, but Kelly says they are her Dreaming, a vision from a time beyond memory, yet still persisting, a time in which ancestral beings move across a barren Earth, shaping the landscape. It is a time filled with mythical spirits, sacred places and animal totems. “The Dreaming varies from tribe to tribe, but its roots go back to the people who came to Australia during the ice age. A part of Alice Kelly still lives in the Dreamtime, and as I watch her draw I feel a pang of envy. She must sense that. She looks up. “All Aborigines are born artists,” she says. “You would be too, but your culture has driven it out of you.” Extract from article by Rick Gore, Senior Assistant Editor (National Geographic Vol 198, No 1 July 2000)
The statement reflects both the subject and treatment of the works which are more or less random and chaotic assemblages of images compiled on a ground of metallic washes, suggesting landscapes. They can be understood as a dream-scape in which I have used metaphor and myth to convey various ideas about culture and identity and the role of the artist. Like the “outsider art” mentioned in the statement, the imagery is made up spontaneously, by impulse rather than design, in the surrealist tradition.
